According to Vikram Kapadia, an actor from the movie Yodha, Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions allegedly offer lower pay to actors because of their ‘egotistical’ nature.

Briefly speaking

  • According to actor Vikram Kapadia, Yash Raj and Dharma underpay due to their ‘egotistical’ nature.
  • Actors are worried about how they are compensated, according to Kapadia.
  • Kapadia was remunerated generously by Yash Raj as a writer; however, the actors believe they are being inadequately compensated.

Both Dharma Productions by Karan Johar and Yash Raj Films by Aditya Chopra stand tall as leading production companies in the Hindi cinema realm, celebrated for consistently churning out blockbuster hits. A debut under their banners is often seen as a pivotal opportunity for aspiring talents.

Vikram Kapadia, the actor renowned for his appearances in movies such as Kapoor and Sons and Yodha, along with web series like The Night Manager, Made in Heaven, and Scam 1992, alleges that these two production companies underpay actors because of their “ego.

Kapadia recently discussed the perceived sense of “ego” linked with top studios in an interview, implying that it impacts how they handle payment. According to him, there is a belief at Yash Raj and Dharma that their reputation alone justifies offering slightly lower compensation to artists, expecting them to be content with the association, as reported by Bollywood Now.

The actor suggested that such behavior might be common among everyone, expressing concerns about actors in general.

Although he appreciated the compensation received from Yash Raj Films during his tenure as a writer, he highlighted a common feeling shared by actors about their remuneration. He pointed out that while they provide you with an opportunity, the payment might be slightly lower, but they are always punctual with their payments.

At a moment when conversations regarding the exorbitant fees commanded by celebrities in the entertainment industry are widespread, Kapadia’s comments have entered the fray. Notably, Karan Johar disclosed that he has ceased acceding to the extravagant fees requested by actors, a practice he once embraced in his earlier years in the field.

Karan conveyed to The Hollywood Reporter India that he no longer agrees to pay. He expressed his stance by saying, “Thank you very much, I cannot fulfill your payment demands.” Karan emphasized his refusal to pay anyone and questioned the legitimacy of being asked about the earnings of his recent films. He cited an example of producing a modest film named Kill, wherein he invested significantly due to its innovative concept and introduction of a new talent. Karan highlighted his dilemma when established stars demanded remuneration equal to the entire budget of the movie, making it perplexing how they could ask for such a sum when the budget itself was Rs 40 crore.

Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII), has revealed that Serene Productions, a company under his name, will soon secure a 50 percent ownership in Karan’s Dharma Productions.
