Justice Sanjiv Khanna took pledge the 51st Chief Justice on Monday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna succeeds Justice DY Chandrachud, whose term as CJI ended on Friday.

The Centre officially notified Justice Khanna’s appointment on October 24 following Chief Justice Chandrachud’s recommendation on October 16

Friday marked Justice DY Chandrachud’s final day as CJI, with a warm farewell from judges, lawyers, and staff.

A Legacy of Landmark Judgments

Justice Sanjiv Khanna contributed to landmark judgments, including scrapping electoral bonds, upholding Article 370’s abrogation, and supporting EVM use.

Justice Khanna’s bench granted Arvind Kejriwal interim bail to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections amid the excise policy case.

He had a long tenure as the senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department.

In 2004, he was appointed the standing counsel (civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

He became an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and a permanent judge in 2006.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna. In an X post, he wrote, “I attended the oath-taking ceremony of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who took the oath as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. My best wishes for his tenure.”
