Late on Friday night, a devastating fire erupted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 10 newborns from burns and suffocation.
Upon his arrival in Jhansi on Saturday morning, Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak revealed that the ward, designed for 18 beds, was currently accommodating 49 children.
PM Narendra Modi expressed profound sadness in a post from the Prime Minister’s Office, lamenting the tragic fire incident at Jhansi Medical College in Uttar Pradesh. He offered his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their children in the blaze, praying for them to find strength in the face of such a devastating loss.
The prime minister emphasized that the local authorities, working closely with the state government, are diligently striving for relief and rescue efforts.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office has announced a compensation worth ₹5 lakh for the parents of deceased infants, following orders from CM Yogi Adityanath. Additionally, a sum of ₹50,000 will be provided to the families of the babies who sustained injuries.
Authorities are conducting thorough investigations at various levels to identify the origins of the fire and establish responsibility. In the meantime, the Samajwadi Party has claimed that a machinery short circuit occurred on Friday afternoon, an incident allegedly disregarded by the hospital administration.
