The strategy for operating A-320 aircraft necessitates an additional 253 acres of land, which must be provided by the Telangana state government at no charge.
The government of Telangana has allocated Rs 205 crore for the procurement of more than 280 acres of land to enhance Mamnoor Airport in Warangal. This decision came after the GMR Group, responsible for managing Hyderabad Airport, provided a “No Objection” certificate for the aerodrome’s operation.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) conveyed its readiness to the state government in July 2022 through a GO issued on Sunday, stating its preparedness to develop Warangal Airport for A-320 type aircraft operations under instrument flight rules (IFR). Furthermore, the AAI declared its willingness to cover the expenses associated with infrastructure, operations, and maintenance for the envisaged airport.
AAI Seeks Land Transfer for Mamnoor Airport Expansion Amid Regulatory Constraints
The AAI additionally urged the state government to consider the proposal promptly and facilitate the transfer of necessary land to the airports authority, along with obtaining a no objection certificate from Hyderabad International Airport Ltd.
Before the 25th anniversary of the opening date of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the Government of India, as per the concession agreement with GMR Group, prohibits the development, improvement, or upgrade of any new or existing airport within 150 km aerial distance of Hyderabad Airport, either for domestic or international purposes.
The distance between Mamnoor and Hyderabad Airport is approximately 175 km when traveling by road.
The government has authorized the District Collector of Warangal to procure approximately 280.30 acres of land for the expansion of Mamnoor airport.
The authorities further instructed the Collector to procure an extra 253 acres of land and transfer it to AAI for the purpose of extending the runway.
