The government stated that although health authorities carried out surveillance in the region as a preventive measure, there were no individuals displaying signs of Zika infection.

Officials reported on November 7, 2024, that a Zika virus infection was diagnosed in a 70-year-old male resident of Gandhinagar. Following treatment at a medical facility, he was subsequently released.

The 70-year-old man diagnosed with Zika was discharged by the Gujarat Health Department a week ago, just four days after confirmation, following a complete recovery.

Zika virus is transmitted primarily by the Aedes mosquitoes.

The symptoms include rash, fever, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain. Zika infection during pregnancy can lead to microcephaly, other congenital malformations, preterm births, and miscarriages in infants.

On October 24, the septuagenarian was admitted with symptoms, and his samples were sent to NIV Pune for Zika testing.

The patient recovered after treatment and was discharged about a week ago, with no recent travel abroad, the statement noted. Meanwhile, a report that arrived nearly four days ago from NIV confirmed Zika infection.

As a precautionary measure, health authorities visited the area where the person lives and carried out surveillance and tracking exercises. The statement confirmed no symptoms of Zika were found in the area, and family members’ samples tested negative for the infection.

It may be recalled that both Karnataka and Maharashtra had outbreaks of Zika earlier this year.
